Second grade is a year of highly visible progress in reading, language arts, social studies, and science as well as a year of exploration and discovery of numbers in the world around us.
Second grade is a year of transitions and curriculum milestones. It’s a year in which learning becomes more nuanced and students are expected to be more independent. In language arts, students spend less time learning to read and more time reading to learn. In math, students master concepts in number sense, geometry, money, measurement, time and data. In social studies classes, lessons will bring current events into discussions and will emphasize maps as well as diversity among cultures. The Second grade science curriculum will include investigations in Earth, Physical and Life Sciences.
